UI/UX Design - GiveMeASign

As the UI/UX designer for a team at Hack the North 2021, I helped to build a touchless surveying app for the service industry using computer vision to capture customer feedback through hand gestures such as thumbs up or down, or numbers one through five, which can be analyzed later.

Timeline: 36 hours
Team: Thomas Mastantuono, Karthik Prasad, Manav Bhojak
Skills: Branding, Strategy, Research, Prototyping

Results:

Our team revieved positive feedback from the judges and sucessfully ideated and implemented the concept within 36 hours. I worked closely with my developer team members while researching, designing, and strategizing throughout the project.

The pandemic caused much of the service industry to close or radically change, and as they are reopening there are many questions about how to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. The current solution of QR codes, links to follow, or papers to fill out are often undesirable extra steps for customers. The average survey response rate is 33%, with an in-person survey response rate of 57%, and an in-app survey rate of 13% [SurveyAnyPlace]. Since feedback is crucial to growth for any business, we searched for a solution to create a product which could make it easier for these businesses to get the information they need.

defining the flow

After synthesizing my research, I created a flowchart of how the platform would be organized. I then discussed the flow and further features with my team members.

branding and logo exploration

After sketching the flow and wireframes, I refined the color scheme and created iterations of the logo. I created with a color scheme which has a strong contrast to be acessible to all users. I used the royal blue as a clear and bold primary color, with gold and green to complement it. The gold and green symbolize the positive and negative reactions, and stars. I chose the simple thumbs up/down combination because it represents the ease of use and speed of our survey app.

Prototype

After developing the colors and branding, I translated my wireframe sketches into a prototype using Figma and Adobe Illustrator.

Results & Next steps

In making this app we assumed the users would be able to leave a device on the survey screen for the duration of the survey, moving forward we might consider other conditions. To ensure the app is inituitve, the next step is to test the design and make sure the public facing screen is clear on its instructions. Afterwards, I will further develop the account pages and related features. Our team intends to develop a single survey which could incorporate both the thumbs up/down and 1-5 scale since this was not possible during the span of the hackathon. Furthermore, we would like to explore data analytics and visualization to understand how to best show the results for our users.
